China high-speed rail

Once the ticket is bought, a Chinese high-speed train is a station problem rather than a booking problem. Nothing is collected and nothing is printed: the ticket is electronic and your passport is the ticket. What the station asks of you is time — security screening for every passenger and every bag, a passport check at more than one point, and a gate that closes before the train leaves with no final call.

Should I do it before China?

Partly — some of it belongs before you fly

The buying half belongs firmly before arrival and is covered on the 12306 page. The travelling half is all after-arrival, and its single most useful preparation is a habit rather than a task: budget more time at the station than an airport would need for a short-haul flight, because screening, a long walk to the waiting hall and a queue at the staffed entry lane all stack up before a gate that has already closed by the time the train moves.

  1. Do before arrivalDo not plan a trip to the station to collect a paper ticket. China Railway operates fully electronic ticketing and no longer issues paper tickets; the itinerary slip and the reimbursement receipt are information and accounting documents, and neither may be used to travel.1
  2. Can do in ChinaCarry the original passport used to buy the ticket, and keep the e-ticket details. The document presented at check-in has to be the document the ticket was bought with.2
  3. Can do in ChinaExpect the passport at three separate points, not one: buying the ticket, entering the station area, and boarding, as stated by Romania’s foreign ministry for travellers to China. Each traveller carries their own passport into the station.3
  4. Can do in ChinaOn the self-service gate question, the honest answer is that the two official documents disagree and this needs field verification. The 12306 e-ticket announcement of 2020 says only holders of machine-readable documents such as the resident ID card use the automatic gates, and holders of other documents including passports complete real-name verification at a staffed lane; the 2025 Ministry of Commerce guidance for foreign business travellers says you enter and exit through an automatic gate or a staffed assistance lane. Plan for the staffed lane and treat the automatic gate as a possibility, not a plan.4
  5. Can do in ChinaGo through security. 12306 states that all passengers and their belongings are screened and advises leaving enough time, since both ticket sales and check-in stop before departure. The railway prohibited-items catalogue from the National Railway Administration and the Ministry of Public Security lists ten categories, with petrol, kerosene, diesel, benzene and ethyl alcohol among the flammable items.5
  6. Can do in ChinaLeave lighters and aerosols at the hotel. The railway list is not the metro list, and the catalogue text does not publish a specific lighter or match allowance for high-speed trains, which in practice is why such items are confiscated.5
  7. Can do in ChinaArrive at least 40 minutes before departure, and closer to 60 at the very large stations. Check-in closes before the train departs and there is no final call; 12306’s English FAQ warns about the cut-off but does not publish the exact number of minutes.6
  8. Can do in ChinaKeep the passport on you for the whole journey rather than in the hotel safe. Article 38 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law requires foreigners aged 16 or over to carry their passport or residence permit and produce it for inspection by public security organs.8
  9. Can do in ChinaIf you need a reimbursement receipt, collect it at a station with the original document before departure or within 30 days after the journey — it is not needed in order to travel, so leave that queue until afterwards.1

What can go wrong

You queued at an automatic gate on your passport and it would not let you through.

What to do instead Step out and find the staffed lane. The two official texts do not agree on whether a foreign passport works at the automatic gate, so the staffed or assisted lane is the reliable route — and those lanes are few and get very crowded in the last minutes before departure.4

You arrived the way you would for a short-haul flight and the gate was already shut.

What to do instead Chinese high-speed rail closes check-in before departure with no last call, and the exact cut-off is not published by the English FAQ and may differ by station. Missing it means going to a ticket counter to change the booking, which may carry a fee.6

You renewed your passport between booking and travelling and are carrying the new one.

What to do instead Check-in requires the document the ticket was bought with. Refund and rebook on the current passport before you travel rather than discovering the mismatch at the gate.2

You printed the itinerary sheet and think that is your ticket.

What to do instead It is not. The itinerary information and the reimbursement receipt are explicitly not valid for travel — only the e-ticket held against your identity document is. Walk in with the passport.1

You want to change or refund the booking once you are already at the station.

What to do instead Use the 12306 English website or app for changes and refunds. The station self-service machines only accept the foreigner permanent residence ID card for foreign travellers, so a passport holder has no machine option and must queue at a staffed window.7

One of you is holding everybody’s passports and has gone ahead to the platform.

What to do instead Every traveller needs their own passport to get past station entry, since the document is checked at purchase, at entry and at boarding. Hand them back before anyone walks ahead.3
