WeChat Pay for foreign travellers

Weixin Pay is the payment method this site can be most definite about, because WeChat publishes the answers itself, in English: which identity documents it accepts, what it charges, what the transaction limits are, and whether a Chinese number is needed. The card-network list is the one answer that comes from somewhere else — China’s official payment guide for foreign visitors, not WeChat. That is more first-party detail than exists anywhere for Alipay. International cards here are for everyday spending inside mainland China only.

Should I do it before China?

Yes — finish this before you fly

WeChat states that payments are restricted and cannot be made until real-name authentication is completed, and that the account is unfrozen only once valid identity information is supplied. Passport-based verification also triggers a request to upload a copy of the passport, which is reviewed rather than waved through. Done at home, this is a quiet ten minutes with the passport on the desk; done on arrival, it is the reason you cannot pay for the taxi.

WeChat’s help centre gives the sequence as: register, then Me – Services – Wallet, then Cards – Add Card, accept the service agreement, and follow the prompts for your identity information before adding the card.1
  2. Do before arrivalUse your own number. WeChat’s help centre asks and answers the question directly — a Chinese Mainland (+86) number is not required, as long as your international number can receive SMS verification codes. The real constraint is SMS reception, not the country of the number.2
  3. Do before arrivalHave the passport ready. WeChat lists a passport as an accepted document for setting up Weixin Pay, alongside the PRC Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card and the mainland travel permits and residence permits held by Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan residents.3
  4. Do before arrivalType the name exactly as printed on the document, including capitalisation and punctuation. WeChat also asks for the document, the mobile number, an address, an occupation, a photo of the document and a clear photo of your face. Copy the printed string rather than typing the name from memory.9

In that same guide, American Express appears on the Weixin Pay list and not on the Alipay one — so an Amex holder should try WeChat first.4

WeChat states that transaction fees are waived for single transactions under CNY 200, that a 3% fee applies to single transactions above CNY 200, and that if you request a refund the fee is reimbursed in proportion to the refunded amount. Your issuing bank’s own foreign-transaction charge sits on top of this.5
  8. Can do in ChinaTreat Weixin Pay as the small-and-medium payment tool. The published international-card limits are CNY 6,500 per transaction, CNY 50,000 per month and CNY 65,000 per year, with the exchange rate set by the card network and the issuing bank.6
  9. Can do in ChinaDo not plan to send money to people. WeChat states that international cards currently work only for everyday purchases within mainland China, and do not support red packets or transfers.7

What can go wrong

A hotel bill of about CNY 7,000 is declined even though the regulator’s announced limit is USD 5,000 per transaction.

What to do instead WeChat’s published per-transaction limit for international cards is CNY 6,500, which this site converts at a rough USD 900 — below even the USD 1,000 per-transaction limit that preceded the 2024 increase. That conversion is ours and moves with the exchange rate; the two published figures, CNY 6,500 and USD 5,000, sit on official channels at once. Plan against CNY 6,500 and settle large bills with the physical card at the terminal.611

Real-name verification keeps failing and you cannot see why.

What to do instead WeChat requires the Full Name exactly as listed on the document, capitalisation and punctuation included. Hyphens, apostrophes and multiple given names have to be reproduced character for character from the passport; a reordered or guessed spelling is the likely cause.9

The app installed fine at home, but the first payment attempt in China is blocked.

A guesthouse host, private guide or driver asks you to transfer the money or send a red packet.

What to do instead International cards on Weixin Pay cover everyday purchases in mainland China only; transfers and red packets are not supported. Pay that person in cash, or ask whether they can present a merchant collection code.7

You are surprised by an extra charge on a restaurant bill of about CNY 400.

What to do instead Above CNY 200 a single transaction carries a 3% fee, and it is refunded only in proportion if you later get a refund. Keep individual payments under CNY 200 where that is practical, and use the physical card or cash for larger amounts.5
